Furlough: June 29-July 22

We left for Taiwan last year on August 19, 2009 not knowing for sure what to expect. What we found was a nice campus in the country and a good job with a fair boss. We lived in a 2-bedroom apartment for the year with Malachi & MaRae sharing a room.

Brent taught Geography, World History, Chemistry, Government, ESL Science/History and ?
I taught Home-Ec, ESL Religion, and 7th & 8th Grade Religion and was the Head Dean.

We came home on furlough on Tuesday, June 29. 2010. Since we arrived in Seattle around 7 PM, we spent one night in a hotel. The next day, we drove down to see Cammie, Jeremy, and Serena; Cammie is my sister. She made us feel so comfortable and she cooked some of the best foods known to man. We suffered quite a bit from jet lag. To make matters worse, my legs started going numb.

On the plane, my tailbone hurt, but I did my best to ignore it. By Saturday night, I was needing sleep so badly and my bones and muscles ached something fierce. I finally slept, but fitfully. In the morning, when I woke up, my legs felt numb; I couldn't seem to shake it.

We drove to Brent's sisters' house in Portland, but the pain got worse. The only relief I found was sitting in a hot tub of bath water. I prayed about it and the next morning was impressed to find pressure points in my lower back. I used a super ball to push on the points and my numbness went away. Praise the Lord.

We thourghly enjoyed our time at Brad and Alanna's house visiting with their two lovely children Aaron and Hannah and Brad's Mom and sister and Brent's brother Matt.

On Wednesday morning, July 7, we drove back up to Seattle, boarded the plane and began our flight to our individual destinations. Brent and the kids flew to Indianapolis where his parents were waiting and I flew to Minneapolis/St. Paul where my Dad picked me up. We got to spend four hours together which was REALLY nice. I ended up staying at their house for 14 days all by myself. Brent was gracious and took care of the kids for me. During my freedom, I developed healthier habits when it came to eating and exercising. I learned to download stuff to my iPod so that I could listen to Chinese while I ran each day. The Chinese books I bought from the Dysarts were also used during that time and I finished the first two chapters of reading and writing.

July 8, I started a special diet to rid my body of toxins, etc. and within two and a half weeks, I lost 9 pounds. Since I started, I have lost 6 more pounds. To accomplish this, I ate mostly vegetables along with specific grains, yogurt, some oils, nuts and seeds, and a few low-sugar fruits. And, I have been running 25 minutes every other day which has helped me tone up nicely.

I enjoyed spending two weeks with my parents; I felt like a little girl again. On July 22, Brent and the kids drove up to my parents and we were all reunited.
